INSTITUTO DE CIENCIA DE MATERIALES DE SEVILLA

The Institute of Materials Science (ICMSE) was created in 1986. In 1996, it moved to new premises at the Isla de la Cartuja, combining with two other Mixed Institutes to make up the Isla de la Cartuja Scientific Research Centre (Junta de Andalucia - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Universidad de Sevilla).

The Institute comprises three research units housed in the building at the Isla de la Cartuja and an external unit at the Physics Faculty on the Reina Mercedes campus.

Today it incorporates research groups of CSIC and the University of Seville. The aim of these groups is to unite efforts in various areas of solid-state physics and chemistry, physical chemistry of surfaces, and other related disciplines of materials science. Such activity seeks to contribute to scientific development within the Research Plans of both regional and state authorities, and their EU equivalents, in the field of materials science and technology.

The company SOLARION develops and manufactures flexible thin-film solar cells based on CIGS. The silicon-free flexible solar cells are manufactured with a proprietary low-temperature process on a polymer foil using roll-to-roll manufacturing technology. The properties of the solar cell, e.g. flexible, light-weight, un-breakable, allow new photovoltaic application e.g. fassade integration.

Universitat Jaume I (UJI) came into being as a higher education and research centre on 27 February 1991 to meet the unanimous social demand in the Castelló area. It was also the fruit of a tradition in education inherited from the Teacher Training studies at the old University College of Castelló (Col·legi Universitari de Castelló, CUC), which dated from 1969. In its first year, the ten lecturers at the CUC gave classes to 21 Science students and 85 from Philosophy and Arts. The CUC became part of the Universitat de València at the end of 1979. Being fully aware that communication and creativity are the most important instruments for the future, Universitat Jaume I is a pioneer in the use of the new information technologies. Indeed, UJI was the first academic institution in Spain to become part of the World Wide Web (WWW) and to develop a browser that could be used to search for information on the Internet. This browser went on to become one of the most widely used in Spain. Universitat Jaume I is also the first university to have a Centre for Education and New Technologies
